Fools Duel Half Marathon

First Half Marathon has been completed!!

Now that training is over I kind of feel like… umm now what? Kensie and I have a 10 miler planned for this weekend to keep the millage up, but its kind of sad to be not training! I guess on to the next one. J

Anyway Jon and went to Gloucester on Friday night for the entire weekend… Saturday morning we woke up, got some breakfast, and went to the beach. Gloucester is seriously so beautiful. I need to come back to this beach during the summer.

I LOVE this photo...

It was probably about oh... 40 Degrees out? There was a surfer... I couldn't believe he was out there!

I was trying to get a picture of us with the beach in the background... didn't really work out. BUT I thought this picture was cute. Got to love instagram and how it can make your skin look so clear :)

Anyway we watch the Bruins at Stones  after the beach. I just want to say I loved this place. One thing that is surprisingly difficult about Metrowest Boston is finding a place that will play the sound of Bruins games. Most places around here have Triva, Music, ect... which makes sense, there are a lot of 20 & 30 something year old's living in my area, but it really does suck sometimes. We enter this bar... Bruins sound is blasting. The bar tender was personal and hilarious, wings where good and every-time the Bruins scored they would dig this giant bell. Good Place. I told my boyfriend I wanted to come during one of the Bruins playoff games ha-ha.  We actually ended up going back for a drink after dinner with the group that was with us..

Got to carb load right?

Anyway... Now to the Race....

The course was I would say pretty difficult...  It was extremely hilly... I remember once running up a hill, getting to the top, seeing the down hill, then the GIANT hill I had to climbed back up... its like really?? Kensie and I also ran Comm Ave (The Newton Hills) for our training, which helped a lot. If you have googled "Fools Duel Half Marathon" and reading this, run hills to train!! I couldn't tell you the amount of times I told myself during this half "I am so glad I trained on Comm Ave".

However with that being said it was also one of the most prettiest runs I have ever been on. This course is beautiful, so if that gets you motivated, as it does me, one would be okay!. At one point when you are coming back you view is the ocean... just dark blue ocean water you can seen for miles and miles. I wanted to grab a picture but I was really focused on well.. running.

Results:  From Racewire...

Results from the Watch....

Distance:              13.00
Time:                   1:51:49
Avg Pace:             8:34 min/mi
Elevation Gain:    610 ft
Calories:                1,074 C

On Elevation Gain: Again...that is a lot of freaking hills! SO I did some research on what that means, and its total amount of distance climbed. SO If you traveled up 5 hills  and back that were 100 feet long, you would have traveled 1,000 feet. People reading this are probably like duh... Sara. So yes, I am just figuring this out! ha-ha  Anyway. Yeah. That was a lot of hills!

The Elevation Map from my Garmin...

Garmin Splits...

Mile 1:                  8:32
Mile 2:                  8:01
Mile 3:                  8:17
Mile 4:                  8:24
Mile 5:                  8:43
Mile 6:                  8:27
Mile 7:                  8:31
Mile 8:                  8:41
Mile 9:                  8:42
Mile 10:                8:59
Mile 11:                8:43
Mile 12:                8:50
Mile 13:                8:58

As you can tell I started off way to fast. Mile 1 I was  like "Okay pace yourself" and still ran it faster then I wanted too. Then Mile 2 happened, and I was like "Slow down Sara... Slow Down".  I started to slow down a little come by Mile 3 and then by Mile 4 I was running the pace I wanted to run at.  This is one thing I want to work on this summer is being able to pace myself. I always start off way to fast, and I want to work on storing some of that energy for the end!

The course was hard so I had to talk my self that I could do it the whole time.  "OMG and I said one day I would like to run a Marathon... screw that I am never running a Marathon... this is HARD".  Was actually a conversation I had with myself. Then I just kept telling myself to get to mile 10, then I would be almost there. I kept remember how easy a 5K felt after all the training, and told myself that's all you had left. I think part of it was nerves. I was so nervous the entire time I may have been running to fast, and I just kept focusing on that. I am thinking next race I am going to be able to run it a bit more relaxed.

2 hours after the race, I decided a Marathon was still in my long term goals. It really wasn't that bad was it? ha-ha

Half Marathon Training Conclusion

Last week’s runs were the taper down for the half Marathon I ran on Sunday.  Short and sweet, and I got them all done outside, which was nice! I think treadmill season is officially over. I will probably be doing a lot of runs after work, which is not ideal for me, but its so much better than going on the treadmill!

Sunday: Swim for 1.94 miles.

I totally would have done 2 mile swim if I knew how close I was.

Monday: Yoga!

Tuesday: 4 mile run outside.
41 Degrees for this run!! Its getting so warm out!

Distance:  4.18 mi
Time: 34:25
Avg Pace: 8:14 min/mi
Calories: 350 C

Mile 1: 8:27
Mile 2: 8:13
Mile 3: 8:25
Mile 4: 7:48
Mile 5 (.18 mile) 8:28

This was my first time running with a group on Tuesday night.  The trail that they run is so pretty… I really enjoyed it. I am also moving like right next to it in May so its definitely going to be my go too. I am excited to live some place where I will enjoy my running routes outside my door. Right now there are some pretty views, but nothing compared to what it’s like to run around the Charles!  The final mile here was fast. I was keeping pace with someone I was running with and the last mile I was like “wow this is rough!!” My long sleeves were covering most of my watch and I saw “.48” I assumed there was an 8 on the other side of that… nope a 7. Its awesome what you discover you can do when you run with other people who push you beyond your comfort zone!

Few Pictures from the run... blurry action shot!

I thought this was the coolest bridge!! Just in the middle of the walkway!

Wednesday: 3 Mile Run outside.  57 Degrees! I even wore a tank top running!

Distance:             3.23 mi
Time:                    28:39
Avg Pace:            8:53 min/mi
Elevation Gain:  86 ft
Calories:              269 C

Mile 1                   8:14
Mile 2                   8:44
Mile 3                   9:28
Mile 4 (.23)        9:50

Ah. This run. I need to not eat chips and 5 layer dip right before a run.   Which is obvious, but I still don’t practice what I know very well.  This chart is my timing chart, as you can tell at the end I had to stop like multiple of times because of a side stich. Lesson learned, don’t forget to eat your granola bar at work, so you won’t be starving when you get home, and then eat and go out for a run.

Thought this view was really pretty! The one view I will miss when we move.

Thursday: 2.24 Mile Run Outside: Hills

Distance:             2.24 mi
Time:                    19:38

March 24 Recap

This week I missed a lot of workouts (3) blah.

Sunday: Off (Missed going for a swim)

Monday: Missed yoga due to signing a new lease on an apartment. I tried I really did! BUT its all for exciting things to come.. so it was totally worth it!

Tuesday: Treadmill run

Duration: 34.36
Calories: 269
Distance: 3.50
Distance Climbed: 169 Feet
Average Pace: 9:52

Wednesday: Treadmill Run

Duration: 51:06
Calories: 429
Distance: 5.41
Distance Climbed: 354 feet
Average Pace: 9:29

Thursday: Body Sculpt Class

Thursdays are normally my “workout twice day” followed by my rest day on Friday. Last Thursday Jon and I went to the Bruins game so I missed my run. I contemplated doing one of my missed days on Friday, which is normally my rest day, and I said eh screw it and went shopping.

 Ya... go Bruins!

Then Friday I really did do some damage. I actually tried lulu stuff on for the first time. That was a bad idea... although the sports bra and tank I got there were really nice.. its just a little ridiculous what it costs!

Saturday: 12.66 mile run.
Secret to being a runner? Just never play with your Garmin buttons. I by accidently turned my automatic lap off so I didn’t get a mile by mile pace.  Also didn’t record the highest elevation but I was probably around the same as before. I am guessing the Newton Hills were the highest climbed. BUT regardless it was an awesome run.  My friend Kensie and I ran from Riverside station in Newton to the Finish line of the Boston Marathon in Boston….

Distance: 12.66 mi
Duration: 1 hour and 52 minutes.
Average Pace: 8:55 minute/mile
Calories Burned: 1,071

I love looking at our run on map... I used to think that was impossible. :)

Few pictures from the run...

Fenway...

We ran around the Boston Common a few times to get to 12...

Then we were close to the finish line and I was like lets just run it...  then I ran past the finish line so ended up running .66 more than planned. So this picture was taken long after our run after lunch.

After our lunch we had lunch on Bolyston Street while watching the Bruins game. I enjoyed at 26.2 which is Sam Adams Marathon beer. It was really good... tasted a lot like Summer Ale, Which is out now by the way? Normally I am like... way to early for that. BUT after this winter, bring the summer ale on.

Friday: off

Saturday: Long run: 11 Miles on Comm Ave.

Comm Ave as become Kensie and I new running stop. Its just so fun. Its challenging, a lot of runners, ect.  Anyway. This run was not one of my finest. Turns out ordering Crab Rangoons at 11:30 at night and trying to run at 8:00 the next morning is not a good mix... live and learn haha... (yes I know that's obvious).

Distance: 11.20 Miles
Time: 1:41:53
Avg Pace: 9:06 min/mi

I started off feeling good, then I felt my stomach hated me and told me with cramps, then I got rid of said cramps. I didn't feel great during this run at all. BUT at the end I was glad I could push through regardless finish strong with all under 9 minute miles. My number one goal for the half marathon is to have all my mile under 9:00 expect maybe the first one.

Last long run this weekend! 12 miles!!

Newton Hills

This weekends long run was one of the best I have had in a really long time, and dare I even say ever? I am not really sure what got into me.  There are some physical factors that I could add it....

I was wearing my running shoes that I love....and not my pair that are not really good for running! When I bought my first pair I didn't really know what I was doing. Luckily I won a second pair on Fit Foodie Finds from Under Armor that I love. The shoes make the world of a difference!

I was running comm ave.  What motivation! There were so many people running and all different ages... so awesome.  This is part of the Boston Marathon route, and known to be one of the hardest parts and hardest marathons. I ran the Newton Hills to Boston College. When I started running I noticed that people volunteer their time to had out water, and sports drinks to runners training for their races. Like how awesome is that? This is the group that was doing it. Anyway... Thank you!! It saved me when I thought I couldn't go any further!!

My running path was pretty much clear.... no side walks really needed for Comm Ave. Its a one way street that goes along with comm ave.

I ate before I ran, like woke up 2 hours early just to eat! I had a 1/2 whole wheat bagel, low fat cream cheese and banana. I think it really helped!! I think equally as important to what you eat before a run is when you eat, I think that was one of my problems.

Also It was SOOOOOOOOOOOO nice out on Saturday.  Almost perfect running conditions. My Garmin says it was 46 and sunny, yeah perfection.

Newton Hills.

The Stats.

Mile 1: 9:02
Mile 2: 8:11 * I saw this after mile 2 and was like crap! That was fast! I was worried I wasted a lot of energy
Mile 3: 8:28
Mile 4: 8:39
Mile 5: 8:19
Mile 6: 8:38
Mile 7: 9:16 *Side stitch returns. I feel like this is going to be my "hit the wall mile".
Mile 8: 8:30
Mile 9: 8:47
Mile 10: 8:50
Mile 11(.10): 10:00

I am not really sure I understand the elevation charts but here it is.. Elevation gain: 428ft

So yeah, a lot better then I have been doing! This Saturday I have a 10k. I hope to get a personal record. This weekend I set a PR for 10k my running it in 53.12. I been hoping to break the 55 mark for awhile now. I am not sure If I will be able to beat that, but always can try right? I also beat my personal record of a 5K with this run, and ran 5k in 26:09.

Goals: PR in 10K and get under 26 minutes in a 5K.

Tour of Waltham

I decided to do my longer run on Saturday this morning starting at 8:30. For a couple of reasons. 1. I thought it was going to be warmer (turns out I was wrong, Sunday was like beautiful) According to garmin it was a whopping 12 degrees out for my run.  2. Jon and I were going into Boston Saturday to watch the Bruins and the Cuse game and hang out with some people, so I wanted Sunday to rest up.

Anyway the 9 miles went fairly well. I still felt like crap starting mile 9. At this point I think its all just in my head, every weekend now will be a running record of longest run. Next weekend? 10. I am pretty pumped about that one.

For my run I decided to take a little tour of Waltham. Although I was so disappointed where I came across one of my favorite places to run and it was not plowed, like at all. I tried to go down the path a little to see if it would clear up, but no such luck. It was still a pretty run with no views.

Waltham Common...

Eventually the Charles river will not be frozen over.... eventually.

The stats...

Mile/ Pace:
Mile 1: 9:22
Mile 2: 9:04
Mile 3: 8:47
Mile 4: 9:11
Mile 5: 9:09
Mile 6: 9:51
Mile 7: 9:25
Mile 8: 9:29
Mile 9: 10:07 (walking & running due to running stitch and ice. I am so mad at myself I missed being all under 10:00 minute pace by 7 seconds!!) SO CLOSE. SO CLOSE.  Although the last few miles were all up hill. So I will give myself a little break.
Mile 10: (.20 miles):

I really like this chart...

So running goals and questions I have to get answered for myself during my next long run.

1. Running stitches, where are you coming from, because it hurts! Always the last mile on my long runs. I think its because I have eaten before the last two runs. Although I feel like I should before burning 800 calories plus by running so many miles. Theory. To be tested. So far waffles and toast with almond butter and 1/2 of a banana are ruled out. I also may want to think of fueling during my run? Or having water on me?

2. Running shoes, I have a pair of probably two shoes. One is tight sturdy pair. I have been wearing thiese because they are better on the ice and snow that has been around for the majority of my training. However they are not my favorite pair which are my minimalist shoes. Are minimalist shoes okay for longer runs? I am not going have to do some research.

3.  Goal: all miles to be under 10:00 with an average pace of under 9:20. I can do this.

City Views

This weekend I knew what I had to do. 8 Miles. My training has now caught up to me and I am on schedule instead of ahead of schedule, so there is no more bailing out now. Hopefully no more cold/sinus headaches/ and fevers are in my future.  This past weekend I had a sinus headache on one side of my head. It was right above the eye behind the eyebrow. It went away Sunday after I took some Ibuprofen and has only came make to a very slight sinus headache. Figures crossed it does not turn into what it was cause that was unpleasant.

This weekend was fun. Our typical Friday night consisted of us going to happy hour after work and then both asleep on the couch by 10:00.  On Saturday Jon and I were dog sitting so took him for a little hike up Prospect Hill Park. Which is a great little hike/running area.

There was some of the hill that was plowed because its pavement, but the majority of the park sill had a lot of snow so we couldn't see the side in which Boston was on, but still a lot of fun. Saturday night we went out in town and met up with an old friend to watch the Duke vs Cuse game. Well lets just say it was not a good week to be a Cuse fan. They lost to both BC which was a huge upset and then lost to Duke again this weekend. Womp Womp.

Then Sunday morning came, 8 miles. Ug. I hadn't taken the Ibprofen at this point, which if I knew it would have worked as well as it had I would have. You live and you learn I guess. You know those runs where start out on mile one, you look down at your watch expecting to round mile 2 and you are at like .30 miles. That's how this run started for me. Every time my feet hit the pavement my head just was pounding along with my pace.  I was wondering how I was going to finish. Then around miles 2-5 I felt as though I could run my half that day. Although with views like this... its hard not to be motivated.

The around mile 6-7.5 I had the worst running stitch. Ug. Those are the worst. I was trying really hard to ignore it but it just wasn't happening. I was pissed because up to the point my pace for running the 8 miles was 9:15 which would get me right around 2 hours for a Half Marathon, which is my goal. I ended up with a pace of 9.39, which is just over my goal by 3 minutes or so.

Mile 1: 8:59 min/mile
Mile 2: 10:04 min/mile *oh hi ice, snow and slush
Mile 3: 9:42 min/ mile
Mile 4: 8:44 min/mile
Mile 5: 8:52 min/ mile
Mile 6: 9:07 min/ mile
Mile 7: 11:05 min/mile *oh hi ice, snow and slush, and running stitches.
Mile 8: 10:38 min/mile

Over all I was happy with that run though even though my pace was all over the place. Who runs a 8:44 mile then a 11:05 mile? BUT it felt good to get back out there after taking a weekend off from my longer runs.  Training is really starting to ramp up now, I am getting pretty pumped about doing this half!  I just wish it would start feeling like spring!! How awesome is it going to be when these pictures are no longer of the Charles River frozen over? Warm thoughts, which are going to be needed because the polar vortex is back.

Trying Something New: Hills.

This week’s workouts were about not over doing it and getting to feeling better. Which to say, aside from a small lingering cough, I am feeling better.  Actually to my surprise I felt like running actually helped my cold.

Monday: Yoga Fit.

Tuesday: Treadmill Run.
Distance: 3.51 Miles
Climbed: 84 Feet
Average Pace: 10:09/ Mile
Calories Burned: 260
Time Elapsed: 33:42

When I post my runs on the treadmill they include a .10 mile warm up and then the cool down at the end which ends up being around .30 miles. Unfortunately the pace is including those as well. That’s why my pace is so high normally.

Wednesday: Treadmill Run
Distance: 4.29 Miles
Climbed: 108 feet
Average Pace: 9:45/ Mile
Calories Burned: 365
Elapsed Time: 41:55

Thursday: Body Sculpt Class in the AM

Thursday: Hill Training.
So I have read a few blogs about this half marathon I am running and they all alluded to the hills. Well Kensie and I have not been running hills on our long run so I know that I needed to get started with that.  I found this running group on Meet Up in Waltham and met up with them to run some hills at one of the colleges. I must say that has been one of my most enjoyable runs I have had for awhile! I think for a number of reasons, first off the weather was nice... I think it was probably in the low 40’s and high 30’s last night. It was so nice out that day I had my windows rolled down while driving...

Also it’s been so long sense I have run a shorter distance outside. Longer distance runs are fun and all, but I have missed the short and sweet runs outside. I been avoiding outside well because, its dark. BUT running on the campus I didn't even really think about it. I was also wearing extremely bright running gear...

Bright enough? I kind of remind myself of a neon watermelon.

One other reason I think it was so nice is because the hills were actually pretty easy to maintain. Where I normally run the hills are ridiculously hard because of the angle they are. Seriously they go like straight up, but these hills were big, but a lot longer instead of straight up. I really enjoyed the challenge without being overly tired.  I must say I will be back for this, it was a lot of fun!

Also just the group was just really enjoyable. They were all sorts of levels of runners there and I found myself at least for that run someplace in the middle (they were running a half this weekend so I think some of them were taking it easy....).  Just running with people makes the world of a difference. I don't have many friends that are into running, especially that live around me (aside from Kensie on the weekends) So finding some people in town who like to run was a great experience! :)

Anyway here were the stats for this run:

Distance: 3.36 miles
Time: 31. 12
Average Pace: 9:17 Seconds
Calories Burned: 297
Elevation Gain: 255 feet.

Mile 1: 9:27 Min/Mile
Mile 2:  9:16 Min/Mile
Mile 3 9:05 Min/Mile
Mile 4 (.35): 9:23 Min/Mile

Friday Rest! Starbucks, and Happy Hour.

Have a good weekend!

The Ugly

The good, the bad, and the ugly.  I will write about them all on this blog, and this weekend was definitely the ugly.  On my birthday I started to feel a little under the weather, Jon had a cold and I was clearly getting it so by this weekend it was attacking my body full on.
The cold that has been going around is strange.  It’s like cough that comes from the lungs but it is a full on sinus infection as well with a little bit it of a fever.  Saturday night my eyes were so watery I could barely stand to keep them open watching the Olympics and went to bed around 11:00 on a Saturday night, for me that’s early.
So this weekend not only was I sick BUT the Olympics Men’s Hockey games were on at 7:00 AM Saturday and Sunday. So what did this all mean for workouts?
I had been debating going to my body sculpt class and missing the end of the game. BUT in reality who was I kidding, it was really not debate at all, was I really going to miss this game for my class, NO. Wow what a game it was. Oshie was unreal with getting what I believe was 4 out of 6 shots in the shoot-out. That does not happen. Well party because it is against the rules in the NHL but seriously that was so awesome to watch him do that.  I of course immediately looked him up after the game and he is a center so there is a very slim chance the Bruins would ever go after him. Center is the one position on the Bruins that we are pretty much set with.  BUT that game was crazy and so much fun to watch.
After watching the game Saturday Jon and I went to the gym together to do some strength training. I got about an hour or so in but it was nowhere near the level our teacher brings us to in class. BUT it was kind of nice creating my own routine and also nice to take it a bit easier do to the fact I wasn't 100%.
On Sunday We woke up early again and watched the mens game. Sunday afternoon I attempted a run. I had 8 miles I was supposed to do Sunday but only did a 5k.  Let me tell you 22 degree weather + a cold + asthma does not = a good time to run.  It was ugly my friends it was ugly
Distance: 3.1 Miles
Time: 33.27
Average Pace: 10:47 min/mi
Calories Burned: 267
Mile 1: 10:18,
Mile 2: 10:58,
Mile 3: 10:54
Mile 4: (.10 miles):  12:17.
I got a pretty picture out of it though….
IMG_0772[1]
Seriously that was just embarrassing.  Running with a cold you have to stop a lot to get rid of some body fluids, and I also had to stop to catch my breath a lot. When I got home I felt like I ran 8 miles, and for someone who runs 3 miles a couple days of week, that’s when you know your body is not 100%.  With that being said I actually started to feel better throughout the day and was happy that I did it.
Like I said it the last post, you have to listen to your body. Sometimes it’s hard to know before you started working out. Sunday I saw people running as I went to the grocery store and got supper jealous and was like you know what? I think I feel good enough to do this today. 8 miles, let’s go. As soon as I started I knew my body was not up for it. That’s okay though. It actually fit in well with my training plan.  Next weekend I was supposed to run a 5K race and no longer runs, so I am just going to switch up the weekends and say that was my 5k race.

Snow= Pain

Yikes. Sunday morning was my long run, and let me tell you, running in the snow HURTS. I feel like running in the snow is very much like running on the beach.  My legs are killing me today! I seriously can't wait for this winter to be over... its funny how much I have grown to hate the winter this year sense starting to run.  I think its that with the combo that this has been one of the worst winters we have had over the past few years.
Anuway this is what the majority of the trail looked like on Sunday...

Weekly Update- Feb 3 2014.

Okay. So I think these boring posts I am just going to include a boring title. Just my mid weekly workout/plan for the rest of the week... I am trying to think of what more I can write about. I really do enjoy having a place to write and blogging. So I want to keep it up. BUT I am just trying to figure out an angle. :)

Anyway...

Monday: Yoga Fit.

Tuesday: Treadmill Run for 3.1 miles. (The extra miles on my workouts are the warm-up and cool down)

Wednesday workout: Shoveling- and I am not even kidding. My workout route was thrown for a loop this week because we had a snow storm yesterday. I should be doing a 4 mile run. I was totally on board with get one done before work! (I worked from home). Around 7am I was driving to the gym and I was like... this is so not worth it so I turned around. I said I would go for a run once the roads were clear in the evening... That did not happen. My body was DEAD and today I am in pain. So I chalked up shoveling to my strength training.

Thursday:  4 mile run on the treadmill.

So there it is! I am hoping soon that I will be able to be sharing out door run pictures and not crappy treadmill pictures.

Also I am going to be brainstorming ideas of where I want to take this little thing...
